We compiled a quick list of local and international artist and - though we had no money- we contacted them with this naïve and ambitious idea of creating a platform to think and envision futures on a medium that during lockdown seemed to be the only safe* public space where we could try to grasp what was going on.

Most said yes. Thank you to all of you. All adventurous, curious and radical artists in their own right

This focus of artistic energy has resulted in a great collection of videos, texts, sounds and images mostly new and some older works set in a new context. Some short, some very long, some dark, some cryptical… all interesting and thought enticing 

The festival will also present Radio Pythia a collaboration project between Kristoffer Raasted and Office of Emergency. It launches at the festival with a series of conversation programs dealing with topics such as performativity, de-growth and digital zoom.

We encourage you all to buy works directly from the artists and via bandcamp.

Invitation letter to participate in the online festival PYTHIAS’ JOURNALS.

Pythia is the name of one of the oracles who passed on the word from the gods in Delphi and was considered as the center of the world 2500 years ago.

The name Pythias comes from the Greek verb píthin (= to rot). Maybe this means that visions of the future and the future itself is a process that comes from the things that are changing shape, function, identity and meaning.

The artists Signe Vad and T.R Kirstein have tried with a light and easy touch to create a possibility for the participants and audience to see the present change its’ shape into the future. A fast, quickfooted and clear festival based on this idea of the prophecy – visions of the future.

SO WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE – becoming the voice of the oracle
What envisioned shapes can we see, feel and hear that creates new questions?
What new questions can we ask?

It is  clear for us all that concerts, exhibitions and other kinds of analogue social gatherings are impossible for the time being. But we would like to try to create a context for visions of the future anyway. Online presence is something entirely different for the artist, the work and the audience. The economical situation also.

This festival is based on the same principle as other pre-covid19 festivals, that the audience pays an entrance fee that will be split between the participants (nothing for the organizers) and we will do our best to promote your work to be sold to the audience. This is how it is. If you can see this as an opportunity to create and connect we would be so happy. If not that is totally understandable.

There are lots of possibilities to create a context, shape and form for your work be it live or recorded sound, still or moving images, paintings, performance, text… It’s a multimedia festival in this sense. All sent through one digital monomedia, of course. 

We would like to invite you to participate with strange and radical visions of the future in a way that you see fit for you and your work.

Jørgen Callesen / Miss Fish

Performance artist, artistic director, curator, teacher & researcher

I hold a Ph.D. in Information & Media Studies from Aarhus University and I have worked with digital media and performance art for more than 20 years. As a practicing artist I have created performances, lectures and installations which often include digital, interactive and generative media. My work frequently has a queer perspective which question norms and aesthetics regarding gender and identity and the representation of the body. The pieces have been presented in different formats and venues ranging from art academies, galleries, theater festivals, TV interviews and site specific events all over Europe.

In both solo works and collaborative productions I strive to be an imaginative physical artist developing engaging characters. I have studied puppetry at The Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art, Berlin, Germany and image work with Kitt Johnson, X-act, Copenhagen, DK. I live in Copenhagen where I work as the artistic director of the live art venue Warehouse9 established in 2007.

Danielle Dahl (b. 1989) is a non binary composer, singer, sound synthesist, videographer and performer currently based in LA. Their music is a genre defying mix of analogue synths, field recordings, techno beats and nativistic pop, encompassing themes of identity, alienation, BDSM and transcendence. Their debut album «Loosening Orion’s Belt» was awarded by the Danish Arts Council as one of the 10 best releases in 2018. Danielle Dahls live show has been described as a shamanistic ritual by Hans Joachim Roedelius, or as an artistic boxing match with the self. They have toured in Europe, Japan and North-America with freejazz trio Tigers Mind and as a solo artist. Their music has been featured in The Wire, Politiken (Leading Danish Broadsheet Newspaper), Passive/Aggressive, I Care If you Listen, LA Weekly as well as a number of underground zines and blogs. They have released 3 full length albums, several cassettes and a 10’’ with Daniel Lercher and Lumpy Space Princess, Tigers Mind and bravura in the face of grief. They also run the Copenhagen-based label Abstract Tits and have curated concerts and performances at the legendary Copenhagen venue Mayhem since 2014. They are currently pursuing a double major in Film/Video and Experimental Sound Practices at California Institute of the Arts.

Don Dietrich (us) is a saxophonist and founding member of the highly influential New York City based improvisational group, Borbetomagus since 1979. Recently, he has become involved with the noise/free jazz "supergroup" The New Monuments (with C. Spencer Yeh and Ben Hall).

John Duncan (us) is an artist currently living and working in Bologna (Italy). His body of work includes performance art, installations, contemporary music, video art and experimental film, often involving the extensive use of recorded sound. His music is composed mainly of recordings from shortwave radio, field recordings and voice. His events and installations are a form of existential research, often confrontational in nature.

Stine Frandsen

Stine Frandsen works as a dancer and choreographer. She is educated from the bachelor programme Dance, Context and Choreography at Inter-University Center for Dance Berlin (HZT) in 2015.

Her work is based on sensory encounters with space, form, sound, and energy. She is part of the dancers collective DANSEatelier, and the performance group MESHES where she investigates collective processes around art making.

During the past two years, she has presented her work mainly as part of visual arts contexts and at outdoor site specific locations.

Claus Haxholm, equally an artist and a musician, is continuously working with various genres and artistic positions.
Being active on the noise, experimental and improv scene in Copenhagen for many years, he was part of the group that started the venue Mayhem.
Still very co-laborative he has worked with people as CTM, Audrey Chen, Yoyooyoy, Tobias Kirstein, Shiggajon,Ute Wassermann,Dylan Nyoukis, Iku Sakan and Francesca Burratelli as the duo Gate Hand.
As an artist he has been awarded several times and exhibited in a wide rage of museums and galleries.

Marie Eline Hansen

Marie Eline spiller egne dansksprogede sange og selvkomponerede, agnostiske salmer. Musikken henvender sig fortrinsvis til usikre amatører, som via det uperfekte og hjemmelavede, forhåbentlig kan inspireres til selv at turde vise verden deres musik. I 2016 udkom LPen "urolige venner" og i 2017 udkom "Agnostiske Salmer" igennem et samarbejde af 5 forskellige små pladeselskaber. ME har desuden performet på mange forskellige udstillingsstedet og institutioner.

Geraldine Hudson (GB)

Geraldine is an interdisciplinary British artist, currently based in Stockholm.

Within her own practice she is participating specifically at the intersections of site, myth, psychological topography, otherness and the liminal experience of the magickal body. Drawing from initial psychogeographic work after her masters in 2006, where she was working with archetypes of the wild, sexuality and transgression in relation to carnival/ritual , place and event, her practice has gradually evolved to acknowledge her own relationship to the esoteric, as experiential research rather than anthropological study.

Nanna Gro Henningsen

Dansk billedkunstner der arbejder med video, installation, digital grafik og tekstbaseret kunst. Kendetegnende for hendes værker er den fragmenterede narration, som hun anvender i video- og fotomontager, såvel som i scenografiske installationer og grafiske arbejder. Hendes arbejde trækker på kritisk teori, kulturhistorie og kollektive, kulturelle, forestillinger. Materialet bearbejdes i nye konstellationer og fysiske og æstetiske udformninger i en åben, der aktiverer betragterens eget imaginarium. Hun er optaget af det posthumane og hendes arbejde er stærkt influeret af tænkere som Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuzes og Rosi Braidotti. 

Hun har bl.a. udstillet på Charlottenborg Kunsthal, Den Frie Udstillingsbygning, Overgaden - institut for samtidskunst, Kunsthal Århus og Kunstcenteret Silkeborg Bad. Internationalt har hun udstillet i Sverige, Tyskland, Island, Litauen og U.S.A.

Udover en kunstnerisk praksis er Nanna Gro Henningsen cand. mag. i moderne kultur og har arbejdet som lektor i kunst og arkitekturteori på Det Jyske Kunstakademi, Arkitektskolen Aarhus og som underviser i skulptur og installation på Kunsthøjskolen i Holbæk.

Marianne Jørgensen arbejder med installationer, skulptur, arkitektur, video og fotografi ofte udenfor kunstinstitutionens rammer. Hendes kunstneriske arbejde er beslægtet med land art og hendes tilgang er konceptuel mens værkernes karakter spænder fra det poetiske til det kritiske. Hun arbejder ofte med det nære men i stor skala med materialer såsom jord, græs og andre planter. Bearbejdninger af større arealer med for eksempel skrift udført i asfalt eller rullegræs eller som trampede stier er eksempler på værker. I 1980erne var Marianne Jørgensen en del af kunstnerkollektivet Solkorset, som med en række komplekse og nyskabende værker eksperimenterede banebrydende med kunsten i et udvidet felt mellem rum, arkitektur og skulptur.

Elena Lundquist Ortiz, DK

is a witch, researcher, and curator. She is initiator of hydra, a curatorial research project on watery worlding, transcorporeality and oceanic healing at the Laboratory for Aesthetics and Ecology. Her work and entire being is devoted to the contribution of alternative world-making in the face of planetary crisis. Marcela Lucatelli can already be hailed as one of the most innovative vocalists and composers of her generation. Born in Brazil and based in Denmark, Marcela has earned international recognition for her extremely original, sensuous and politically charged performance works. The composer is known for writing ''scores for the limits of bodies and voice'' (The Wire).

Her pieces are currently performed by vocal elite groups such as the Danish National Vocal Ensemble and Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, together with some of the most edgy ensembles and music collectives in the world, such as Apartment House (UK), Bastard Assignments (UK) and Mocrep (US). Mycelium gruppen

What is Mycelium? A mycelium is the root network of mushrooms. It consists of spores, which form a communicative web with neither spider nor commander. Displaying sensibility and the ability to interpret environmental circumstances, it seeks to expand: eventually forming a disc. It then cannibalizes its own center as to distribute excess energy. In the further attempt to expand, it forms a circle of mushrooms above ground. The fairy rings of folklore: a meeting place for witches, a place for sacred activities: ritual, symposion, sabbath. Communion, transgression. The mycelium itself is sexless, however, the coven is abundant. Its spores cannot be considered closed individual beings, they are explorers, seekers, cannon fodder. Copulating, communicating. However, the mycelium doesn’t form a singular organism, it is legion. A mycelium is an open-ended and indeterminate dynamic structure, where the totality exceeds the number of beings. Birds in motion: black sun.

LEYYA MONA TAWIL [Lime Rickey International] is an artist working with dance, sound and performance practices. Tawil is Syrian Palestinian American, engaged in the world as such. She has a 23-year record of performance scores that have been presented in 40+ cities throughout the US, Europe and the Arab world. Tawil was named the ISSUE Project Room Suzanne Fiol Curatorial Fellow for 2020 for her project “Nomadic Signals”. She was also a 2018 Saari Residence Fellow (Finland). Lime Rickey Internatonal’s Future Faith, commissioned by Abrons Arts Center and the KONE Foundation, was nominated for a 2019 Bessie Award in Music, Her work is supported by the California Arts Council, Pieter Performance Space, Gibney DIP Residency, and Kenneth Rainin Foundation.

Kristoffer Ørum 

Kristoffer Ørum is a Danish artist born in 1975. His practice revolves around the digital spheres, wherein we interact and construct our identities. He has works with algorithms of the everyday lives to make visible the power and impact they have have on our lived lives. Ørum has studied at Goldsmiths, University of London and graduated with an MFA from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2006. He was Professor at Funen Academy of Art in 2012-2015, and from 2015-2018 he was an artistic researcher at Uncertain Archives, Copenhagen University.
